We scrub our faces and bodies and shampoo our hair so that everything glows and looks great. But is this external sparkle alone enough? Andropause – nicknamed “male menopause”– affects about 25 million American men between the ages of 40 and 55, yet the mainstream US medical community has only recently started to recognize this condition; and it continues to be under-diagnosed. Males in this age group might recognize one or more of the common symptoms, including irritability, depression, memory loss, insomnia, night sweats, erectile dysfunction, loss of libido, decreased strength and muscle mass, and weight gain, especially around the belly. As if that weren’t enough, they’ve developed the dreaded gynecomastia, aka “man boobs.” Andropause can occur with age-related hormone changes in men, specifically a drop in the production of the hormone testosterone. A good night’s sleep is extremely important to your overall health. About 40% of Americans have some form of insomnia and up to 15% have chronic severe insomnia. Unfortunately, most doctors don’t discuss this in enough depth with their patients. Obvious symptoms of sleep deprivation include daytime drowsiness, poor concentration and memory loss. However, lack of sleep also causes premature aging, depression, anxiety, behavior problems and an overall decreased ability to handle stress. There is also evidence linking lack of sleep to obesity. Simply stated it is very difficult to lose weight if you are not sleeping at night.


Many people turn to sleeping pills for the answer. Unfortunately, this solution comes with its own set of problems such as eating disorders, “hangovers” and sluggishness the next day. All of these drugs have side effects but fortunately there are alternatives to sleeping pills. First of all, make sure your insomnia is not due to a hormone deficiency or imbalance, which can wreak havoc on your whole sleep cycle and therefore how you feel during the day.
